Deaf Interpreter/Certified Deaf Interpreter

Deaf Interpreter (DI) and Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) services are provided by skilled interpreters who are Deaf themselves. Deaf interpreters generally have native or native-like command of American Sign Language (ASL), as well as in-depth cultural knowledge that can make them more effective than a hearing interpreter in instances such as court cases or when another Deaf or Heard of Hearing individual’s signing goes beyond the fluency of even highly qualified hearing interpreters.

DI/CDI services are often requested to work with the following consumers:

  • People who are Deaf-Blind
  • Deaf people with developmental disabilities
  • Hearing people who need additional support to communicate with Deaf individuals more effectively

DI/CDI services are also commonly used in, but not limited to, the following settings:

  • Mirroring
  • Platform Interpreting
  • Sign Translation
  • Court/Legal settings with hearing interpreter
  • Mental Health settings with hearing interpreter
